What is your calling?
Life Coaching Focus
You probably already develop your physical fitness and other skills, why not also work on your mental fitness? Coaching is for people who want positive change and improvement in their lives, those who are achieving ordinary but seek extraordinary!
If you feel like you don't know what you want, where you're going, or how you're going to get there, then Life Coaching is for you.
In life coaching we look at your 'whole-of-life', exploring health and wellness, career and workplace, relationships and family, spirituality and meaning, and life transitions. You can target specific areas of concern however a base life coaching principle is that all areas of life are inter-related therefore changes in one area will always effect other areas.
Examples of focus areas where individual coaching may assist could include:
- Having chosen an undesirable career path but change is limited by financial or family considerations
- Working long hours leaving little time for positive relationships or health
- Relationship concerns, either personal or work, which are being ignored or conflictual rather than targeted effectively
- Navigating life transitions such as marriage, children, retirement; life lacking meaning; or unaddressed health concerns.
This page provides you with information about the main life areas which may be explored, some of the challenges experienced in these areas and how life coaching can assist. Scroll down or use the links below to be taken down the page to read a little more on each subject.

Health and Wellness
There is a frequent assumption that health and wellness refers mainly to the physical - diet and fitness. However, wellness coaching encompasses physical, emotional and spiritual health. This includes many lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, habits, creativity, work, balance, relationships, relaxation, life meaning and personal growth. We look at all of these, their effect on your overall health and how they link together.
Where there is a specific concern, I will help you explore your problem area and create new goals, assisting initial change and sustaining long-term change. Health and Wellness Coaching can assist you in recognising the impact of poor outcomes in one life area and how this may be affecting other aspects of your life, teach life-skills, and motivate change and improvement. The aim is for you to achieve a well-balanced life with your needs being met and exceeded.
Where you have specific needs for diet and nutrition, personal fitness training, or spiritualism, this can be arranged in conjunction with life coaching or counselling as necessary to gain the best possible outcomes with specialist advice.
Career and the workplace are a major part of most adult lives therefore unaddressed problems in these areas can have a major effect on well-being, and cause flow-on effects to other areas including relationships, family and health. Concerns may range from general dissatisfaction or lack of motivation, perhaps from having chosen the wrong career, to specific issues such as redundancy, workplace bullying, conflict, communication problems, difficulty with excessive travel, stress and burnout.
Career Coaching can help you explore your strengths and weaknesses, preferences, goals, values and life meaning to understand your professional motivations and perhaps to consider alternate pathways. Through coaching, I can provide you the opportunity to learn new skills such as stress management, conflict resolution, coping with aggression, communication skills, or raising emotional intelligence.
Particularly, increasing your emotional intelligence allows you to improve your self-awareness and awareness of others' motivations, assists with overcoming challenges, and promotes more successful relationships. Using these skills can provide you with more effective functioning and coping mechanisms both for the workplace and socially.
Spirituality and Meaning
Whether you are religious or not, there may come a stage in your life when you start to search for your purpose and life meaning. Maybe everything else is going well yet you realise you have a deeper dissatisfaction or feel something is missing. Alternatively, maybe you start to feel like this when other things are not going so well in your life and you feel the need for a major transformation to get your life back on the right track.
Searching for meaning is not easy, and is often something your usual supports, friends and family, may struggle to help you with. Other people may find it hard to understand why you are not satisfied and happy if things are going well for you, or they may try to simply help you with any obvious surface problems. Unless they have been through something similar they will likely find it hard to relate.
No-one can give you the answers to your life meaning except you. Understanding yourself better, your values and how you live them, your vision for your life and your success, can all bring you closer to your personal meaning. Life coaching can provide you with an outlet to explore your deeper self and to increase your self-awareness, to understand what aspects of your life are being neglected, and where you can work on yourself to give you purpose. For some people this will be a gentle evolution of their deeper self, perhaps accessing more creativity, spirituality, or giving something of yourself back to the world. For others this may be a deeper self-transformation, where aspects of your self have been ignored for a long time. Regardless of how close or far you are from your purpose, coaching can help you move towards deeper life satisfaction.
Life-cycle changes can provide challenges for you as you work on any new roles and responsibilities. Examples of life changes may include marriage; having children; a relationship break-down; a new job, promotion or career change; job redundancy or voluntary termination such as retirement; emigrating or moving house; or other challenges which force major change.
Life-cycle changes are defined in two areas: Life 'chapters' are where your circumstances are pretty stable but you are wanting change to grow and achieve. You will be positive, optimistic and seeking opportunities for improvement. A life 'transition' is where your circumstances are more unstable and you may be unsure about what you need to do. You may be reflective, perhaps struggling emotionally or having difficulty coping.
Life Coaching can be very useful to you during both life chapters and transitions. It can help you to develop the skills you need to manage the change, to explore your new role and to prepare for your new responsibilities. This may include developing coping skills to manage any stress, developing your self-awareness so you can understand your responses, and exploring your self-esteem and the strength you have to support yourself. Life Coaching can help you create goals to ensure that while transitioning you remain focussed and motivated towards your desired future.
Strong relationships have many advantages, they enhance physical and emotional health, provide life meaning and a feeling of belonging, improve self-knowledge and self-esteem, broaden horizons and teach life-skills. Our relationships are the foundation of our existence - few people can find happiness without a supportive network around them, partners, family, friends and colleagues.
While relationship counselling may be appropriate for couples experiencing difficulties and conflict, relationship coaching can also be useful if you are struggling to develop and maintain relationships, either personal, work or social. I believe the key to many relationship problems lies in poor communication and repeating unproductive patterns; you can read in detail about these and other behaviour on my Relationship Counselling page.
Through Relationship Coaching, I can help you to explore your patterns in relationships, assess their usefulness and, where needed, help you to change them to develop stronger relationships. Life coaching can help develop your openness and authenticity, improve your communication and interpersonal relationship skills including conflict resolution, reduce any social anxiety and increase your assertiveness, and improve your self-awareness.
It isn't "Can You...?"
it's "Will You...?"
Life Coaching Approach
My training covers many different coaching and counselling techniques including: learning and personality theories, cognitive-behavioural, solution-focussed, narrative, Gestalt, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), emotionally-focussed or person-centred approaches, along with the Sherpa Coaching technique, the GROW model and the Co-active Coaching model.
If you have a preference we can certainly work with a specific approach, if not, I will tailor what works for your needs, rather than choosing a single method. I work best through open and honest discussion, from a strong analytical and objective perspective and a well-studied interest in people, psychology and the mind. This has allowed me to develop high awareness and problem-solving abilities which have been incredibly useful in making improvements in my own and others' lives.
